Happiness means something different to everyone. For me, a key element to happiness is loving yourself at all times, regardless of what you are experiencing on the outside.
Sometimes as we are living our lives, there are moments that startle us and shake us to our bones as we truly glimpse the reality of our lives. In one of those sobering moments, we can somehow become aware of all those things that are unwelcome and “wrong” in our lives. We see the sadness, the frustration, the pain, the sorrow, and the disappointment. Many times our experience of “How did I get here?” can feel overwhelming and such a deep emotional burden to bear. We can feel as though we are just barely keeping our head above the water, slowly sinking into the quicksand, and trapped alone in the dark.
Yet even in the darkest of places, we can find a light. Sometimes it is the light from another. Sometimes it is our own light.
Sometimes we need someone else who is willing to shine their light on us, to show us the way out. To reassure our fears, soothe our worries, and calm our concerns. As we use their strength and support, we are reminded of why we are doing the work and what we are leaving behind.
Sometimes when we are in the darkness, we catch the spark of our own light and hold tight to it. We remind ourselves that we have an innate value, worth, and right to live a immensely fulfilling life; simply because we are alive.
When we choose to go through the darkness, we do so because we choose to be happier. We choose to love ourselves so deeply that the shadows may still frighten us but they no longer hold us hostage in the darkness. We can claim something more. That something more is always happiness in its many forms.
You might be living in hell, but if you can find one thing… just one thing that you can be grateful for… then you can choose to be happy and move forward from there. Outer circumstances shall then no longer dictate your feelings. When you love yourself so deeply that you are willing to do what it takes to dive deeper into a happiness than you have been experiencing, then that is a beautiful thing. And beautiful things will make you happy.
I invite you to share how you choose happiness in the comments below.
