It’s an interesting thing that happens when we’re given feedback about ourselves, our relationships, our finances, and our lives. We either shut down or open up.
For many people, feedback triggers the insecurities of their ego.  When the ego is activated, the mind will minimize, deflect, or defend. It gathers its armor in attempt to keep the hurt and damage at bay.
Strangely enough, it doesn’t matter if the feedback is positive or negative.
A compliment will be dismissed if you don’t feel worthy of receiving it. A suggestion will be redirected if you don’t feel you’re strong enough to make a change. A limitation will be defended if you’re justifying why things are the way they are.
Then you miss the opportunity to become more of who you can become if you’re too busy staying the same.
I recently met with a new potential coach who very effectively showed me what I’m doing poorly and where I’m getting in my own way. But most importantly, I was offered the opportunity to understand what I need to do differently to shift it. A good mentor is like that.
Something magical happens when you allow someone else who has deeper insight into something you’re perhaps too close to, to offer their advice.
It’s like a door is thrown wide open and you can step through it to greater alignment with what you’d like to experience in life. The contrast between where you are and where you want to go is highlighted in a new way.
- You’ll be able to confidently discern if there is truth to the feedback you’ve been given. Â
- You’ll be able to identify your next steps to move forward. Â
- You’ll be able to decide if you’re committed to using the feedback to take your life to your next level.
I invite you to reflect on how you respond when you receive advice. Do you shut down or open up?
Because feedback is a gift you can use reach your highest potential. And that’s the ultimate goal in life – to become the best you can be so you can make the impact you’re born to make.
